What Is Oil Mist Formation?
Oil Mist is a phenomenon that occurs when fuel oil, lubrication oil, hydraulic oil or any other oil is leaked through a narrow crack such as flanges, valves, pumps, and electronic motors or other piping connections or joints in the form of spray outs. These happens generally because of gasket or flange failure. Oil Mist happens when oil droplets of a particular size remain suspended in the air. Due to the low ignition temperature, it has the potential to cause an explosion and is a recognized safety risk to any working environment.
The Model Code of Safe Practice IP15 (Energy Institute 3rd Edition) is an internationally accepted code for the classification of hazardous areas in the petroleum industry. It highlights several important issues relating to, category C / class III (1) fluids such as Diesel, Gas oil & Heating oil. These codes are adhered to by all the industries falling under the relevant category.
“Flammable atmospheres may be formed when flammable fluids (below their flash points) are released in the form of a mist or spray. Such fluids normally regarded as non-hazardous should be treated as hazardous when they are pumped or under pressure and are capable of producing a mist of spray if released from a small hole or flange leak.”
The Solution – Safety Spray Shield
Safety Spray Shields of porous material is recommended to envelop the flanges, valve joints, and other potential leak points or piping connections. These PTFE Safety Spray Shield or PTFE Flange Guards arrest the leakage of pressurized oil and converts the dispersed oil particles back to a liquid rendering it non-hazardous. However if the line temperature is above 230 degree Celsius, we would recommend a different shield style - Stainless Steel Safety Shields as the are they are suitable for applications at very high temperature as they are fire and tear resistant.
Large pump sets have multiple leak points so they are generally completely covered by the same Safety Spray Shields. However, some times, given on the size, a metal frame is also introduced to keep the shields in position.
Indana PTFE Spray Shield For Oil Mist Formation And Spray Outs
Our PTFE flange guards, pipe spray shields, and flange shields are manufactured using multiple layers of ptfe coated glass fiber fabric with an inner scrim. This inner scrim is made of a pure PTFE Scrim which has high chemical resistant. The inner scrim in the safety shields holds onto the flanges, valves and expansion joints keeping the PTFE Shields secured. PTFE flange spray guards are stitched with military-grade Kevlar thread which is known for high strength and thermal stability. Most of the PTFE flange guard and safety shields that are available on the market are stitched with cotton or nylon thread which compromises the product’s safety. Braided PTFE coated ropes are used to secure the PTFE flange spray shields onto the flanges. The maximum operating temperature for these flange spray shields is 250 Celsius. These PTFE shields are manufactured with great care and precision. PTFE Spray Shields or Safety Shields are also known as Oil Mist Spray Shields.
Salient Features Of The Flange Guard:
1) High Chemical Resistance
2) Completely UV Stabilized
3) Multi Layered/Ply Flange Guard Guard ( Beware Of Single Ply Guard)
4) Fire And Tear Resistant
5) Suitable For Applications like acidic, alkaline, solvents and oil etc.
6) Available For Flanges, Expansion Joints, Ball Valves, pumps, Butterfly Valves ball valve Shield etc.
7) Mechanical Strength of PTFE Coated Glass Fiber Fabric
8) Leak Detection>PH Patch that change color
